Golden Administrator Award

The Association of Teaching Artists created The Golden Administrator Award in 2003 to encourage and to support excellence in the
Arts In Education field. The Award recognizes an Arts In Education professional whose talent, dedication, and administrative skills actively strengthen and support the role of Teaching Artists and the arts in the schools. The recipient of the The Association of Teaching Artists’ 2004 Golden Administrator Award is Susan Lesser.

Susan Lesser, has been blending arts with learning since 1973. A graduate of Skidmore College, and as an elementary and special-ed teacher in the Scotia-Glenville and Wappingers School Districts, the arts have always played a central role in her personal and professional philosophy of education. Since 1989 she has held the position of Arts-in-Education Coordinator for the Arlington Central School District in Poughkeepsie. She has been instrumental in supporting the role of Teaching Artists in the schools by developing and facilitating many long term, curriculum based AIE residencies, as well as obtaining external funding to support these projects. Each year she voluntarily organizes the Taconic Region PTA's  Performing Arts Showcase, bringing together Teaching Artists and school representatives. As a result of her exemplary efforts in the past ten years, individuals and specific schools from the Arlington Central School District have won the prestigious Dutchess County Executive's Arts Award in the AIE category on four separate occasions. Sue, also, seeks funding from numerous public, private, and corporate sources to provide venues for musicians, storytellers, visual and other artists.
