The
Association of Teaching Artists created The Golden
Administrator Award in 2003 to encourage and to support
excellence in the
Arts In Education field. The Award recognizes an Arts In
Education professional whose talent, dedication, and
administrative skills actively strengthen and support the
role of Teaching Artists and the arts in the schools. The
recipient of the The Association of Teaching Artists’
2006 Golden Administrator Award is David Silver.
David Silver,
the Associate Chief of Program Development for the
Rochester City School District, is a consummate educator.
His passion and commitment to education and to the
students of the Rochester City School District are a
beacon for all to follow. He has also served as Chief of
Academics and Accountability, Chief of Accountability, and
Chief of Operations for the Rochester City School
District. His experience as an educator ranges from
working with three and four year olds in a migrant program
at SUNY Geneseo, to teaching fifth grade in the Warsaw
Central School District, to Department Head of Special
Education and Coordinating Administrator of Special
Education at Jefferson High School.
The arts have
always been a vital and integral part of David Silver’s
leadership and vision. As Program Director, Principal, and
Mentor Principal of Rochester’s School of The Arts, he
nurtured the arts in the lives of Rochester’s children.
His learned wisdom led to his work as a founder of the
Friends of the School of the Arts.
He is a
scholar, the author of Developing Self-Concept in the
Mentally Retarded: A Guidebook for Teachers, Role
Playing: A Model Unit to Help Foster Self-Concept, and
Mentoring
forthcoming from The University of California Press.
He is a
catalyst bringing together cultural organizations,
artists, educational administrators, and teachers to
encourage the growth of the creative spirit, learning, and
to help children experience art. He has worked tirelessly
with the Rochester City School District and the community
to advocate for all students having access to quality arts
education.
In addition, he
has been a member of GEVA Theater’s Education Committee,
the Rochester Philharmonic’s Education Committee, Temple
B’rith Kodesh’s Education Committee, and the Board of

Arts education
throughout New York State has benefited from David
Silver’s dedication to the Rochester City School District,
to education, to the arts, and to the greater Rochester
Community.
